Knicks to exercise guard Miles McBride’s team option for 2023-24 NBA season
The Knicks will exercise their team option on reserve guard Miles McBride’s contract fo the 2023-24 NBA season, according to multiple reports.
McBride, a 2021 second-round draft pick (36th overall) by New York, will play the season on a $1.8 million contract. Thursday was the deadline for the Knicks to pick up the option.
SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley reported before the NBA Draft that the Knicks had received calls about the guard and the team would exercise the option if a trade was not made.
Begley added that New York values the guard and head coach Tom Thibodeau has spoken glowingly about McBride when asked by reporters in the past. But the 22-year-old was not featured in the regular rotation to a logjam at the position by the end of the year.
McBride had his most consistent run of playing time between Derric.k Rose’s removal from the Knicks’ rotation on Dec. 4 and Josh Hart’s arrival ahead of the trade deadline on Feb. 11. The guard appeared in all 34 games during that stretch and averaged 15.3 minutes of playing time as New York went 20-14 in that span.
After the Hart trade, he appeared in 19 of the 25 remaining games and saw his time cut to 9.1 minutes.
Overall, McBride appeared in 64 games last season with two starts and averaged 3.5 points and 1.1 assists in 11.9 minutes per game (760 minutes total) after playing in 40 games (two starts) with 2.2 points, 1.1 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 9.3 minutes as a rookie.
He totaled 20 minutes in the playoffs over eight games and tallied three points, two rebounds and one assist.
