With Cam Jurgens returning to practice but still on injured reserve with a foot injury and Sua Opeta dealing with a hip injury, there was a possibility Thursday that rookie third-round pick Tyler Steen could could make his first NFL start on Sunday when the Eagles take on the Cowboys.
The Eagles opened practice to Jurgens this week, and he and Opeta were both listed as limited on Wednesday.
The Eagles’ injury report for Thursday will be released later in the afternoon.
During Thursday’s media practice — which did not include team drills — Steen was lined up at right guard with Jason Kelce leading the right and Lane Johnson on the left.
Jurgens and Opeta both received their second fouls in the individual training session, Opeta at left-back and Jurgens at right-back.
If Jurgens isn’t ready to return to action, that would explain why the Eagles signed Julio Jones from the practice squad to the 53-man roster when he only had one day of playing time left.
The Eagles currently don’t have an open roster spot, and if they want to activate Jurgens, they’ll have to take a spot on No.
53 by releasing a player or placing someone on IR.
If they kept Jones on the practice squad for another week, they wouldn’t have this roster dilemma.
The Eagles have a bye week after the game against the Cowboys, so if Jurgens doesn’t play against Dallas, he’ll have an extra two weeks to heal his leg.
He was first injured in Washington’s first game.
Steen was inactive for the first four weeks of the season and played on 13 special teams over the next three games, but he got his first taste of the offense Sunday at Washington when Opeta left game one shortly before mid-time.
Steen had six snaps on offense and was on the field for all but the Eagles’ first touchdown drive late in the second quarter, culminating with A.J.
‘s first TD catch.
Brown.
“He only played a few games, I think six, but I thought he played pretty well,” Sirianni said of Steen Monday.
“He was up against two very good players, (Jonathan) Allen and (Daron) Payne.
” Sirianni also spoke highly of Opeta Monday, a former undrafted rookie who has been with the Eagles on both the 53rd and practice squad since 2019.
“I’m really pleased with Sua and his work.
” what he did,” Sirianni said.
“I think we’ve been attacking pretty well since Sua arrived.
That’s why we trust him to come on and play.
And Stout did a great job preparing the next guys.
