Before establishing himself as a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s high-flying squad, John McGinn acknowledges that he had even begun to search for other clubs after feeling he was “done” at Aston Villa.
At the beginning of the 2022–2023 season, McGinn was out of form and then out of the starting lineup as Villa struggled under former manager Steven Gerrard.
With Emery’s arrival, Villa underwent a transformation, and McGinn achieved unprecedented success.

and he was in possession of every statistic and detail of my outings for St. Mirren and Hibs. When he asked me what position I liked, I said, “just not on the bench like the last few games.” He glanced at me, and I wondered what he was going to say. He then began to circle around, and I responded, “Yeah, I’d play there, I’d play there.”
