It appears as though the Dallas Cowboys are starting over at running back after losing Tony Pollard to free agency. The team re-signed Rico Dowdle to a one-year contract on Monday, marking a step toward a position revamp. After four years marred by injuries, Dowdle just finished his most productive season in Dallas. On 89 carries, he gained 361 yards of total yardage (4.1 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. On 17 receptions, he gained 144 yards and two more touchdowns.
He is currently in charge of a running back group that also includes Snoop Connor, Malik Davis, and Deuce Vaughn. However, the Cowboys will not be bolstering their roster through free agency or the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft.
After paying Pollard $10.1 million in 2023 and the late Ezekiel Elliott $12.4 million in 2022, it is likely that the Cowboys sought to cut costs at the position in 2024. Elliott continues to count $6 million against the 2024 Cowboys cap. Pollard and the Tennessee Titans agreed to a $24 million, three-year contract. The Cowboys also declined to bid for the services of Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley, two other veterans who were available for free agency.
Vice president Stephen Jones, however, stated that the group had a strategy for the job. Tony Dorsett, Herschel Walker, Emmitt Smith, Ezekiel Elliott, and Tony Pollard are just a few of the legendary backs that helped build this company, as Jones stated last week. “We have a strong belief in backs. They have a lot to offer.

“Sadly, we’ve reached a stage where we need to make some choices about how to spend our money,” he remarked. We believe there will be more effective approaches to handle the running back position. We’ll see that one through. Step one was to pollard. Texas running back Jonathan Boroks, Blake Corum, Trey Benson, Bucky Irving, and Jaylen Wright are among the potential draft picks.
