Gerrit Cole, the star player for the New York Yankees, will have an MRI on his right elbow after struggling to recover after spring training began.
The winner of the 2023 AL Cy Young Award has had a strong career, starting at least thirty games in each of the previous six complete regular seasons.
Yankees manager Aaron Boone stated on Monday that the player’s recuperation “has been more akin to what he feels in the season when he’s making 100 pitches.” “He typically doesn’t experience the difficulties with recovery he is. It’s been more demanding and difficult. To find out what’s going on, we’re going to obtain an MRI.”
Compared to other rotation players, the 33-year-old has been throwing less pitches in his spring training starts this year.
“I think there’s a level of discomfort, but I wouldn’t describe it as he’s in pain,” Boone stated. “On his outings, his stuff and command have been excellent. All he’s doing is struggling to heal the way he used to.
Cole has a $324 million, nine-year contract that pays $36 million a year going into its fifth season. He can choose to become a free agent at the end of the season and forfeit his opt-out rights, but the Yankees have the option to nullify that decision by adding a guaranteed $36 million salary for 2029.
Aaron Judge, the center fielder for the Yankees, is anticipated to be fatigued from spring training and not play again until Wednesday.
