Due primarily to the All-Star performances of Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the Los Angeles Lakers (36-30) are presently ranked ninth in the Western Conference. The Lakers are mostly trying to sneak into the postseason through the play-in tournament because Davis is averaging 24.8 points and 12.5 rebounds per game, while The King is averaging 25.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 8.0 assists per game.
That being said, this summer is very crucial. The Denver Nuggets are the favorites in the West, not to mention the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks in the East, thus it’s unlikely that the Lakers will win the NBA championship. The Lakers’ contract situation is intriguing for the summer of 2024, and there may players who will go from the team in large numbers.
For the Lakers, Austin Reaves has been something of a revelation since he played a significant role in the 2021–2022 season as an undrafted rookie. Although his scoring prowess has greatly increased, there are concerns regarding his durability as a third option after LeBron James and Anthony Davis. Reaves can create offense and handle the ball well, but is he untouchable?
No, is the response. In order to obtain a third legitimate All-Star, the Lakers must make a major investment this summer; holding out hope that the nearly 26-year-old would magically mature into one is not the wise course of action. This summer, the Purple and Gold will be merciless, and other clubs will rightfully be clamoring for Reaves.
