Aston Villa faces the prospect of selling at least one key player this summer after losing nearly £120 million in the previous fiscal year.
The Champions League-chasing club reported losses of £119.6 million for the fiscal year ending May 30, 2023, with the following accounting period set to expire on June 30 this year.
The Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR) dictate that teams can lose no more than £105 million over three years, with possible penalties including point reductions.
As Mail Sport reported on March 1, Villa are bracing for rival interest this summer, with midfielders Jacob Ramsey and Douglas Luiz expected to be sought. Villa are unlikely to accept bids for important attackers Ollie Watkins and Leon Bailey, who have signed new contracts since the beginning of 2023, along with Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, and John McGinn.
Last summer, Villa sold homegrown youngsters Cameron Archer, Aaron Ramsey (Jacob’s younger brother), and Jaden Philogene for a combined £40 million, which can be banked as pure profit under PSR rules.
Jacob is also an academy product and is valued at around £50 million, with Newcastle showing interest in January.
Another probable departure would have been Boubacar Kamara, who signed for free in the summer of 2022 and could be transferred for more than £50 million, but the Frenchman will not be available until the autumn due to a significant knee injury.
