D’Angelo Russell’s strong shooting led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 116-104 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday night.
In 34 minutes, the 28-year-old scored 26 points, pulled down six rebounds, stole four, and assisted three times. He went 9-of-17 overall and 5-of-11 from three-point range.
Things were going so well for Russell that when he attempted to pass the ball to LeBron James, it was quickly returned to him with a look that practically told him he needed to shoot.
James’ ploy worked off, as Russell drained an incredible off-balance three with Jalen Williams all over him.
Russell hit his third three-pointer in 70 seconds, extending the Lakers’ advantage to 24 and virtually putting the game away.
Russell’s numbers on Monday were the highest by a Lakers player since Kobe Bryant in 2005-06.
There is speculation that Russell will ultimately cool down, which could pose concerns for a Lakers team that has struggled to find consistent success from behind the arc.
It hasn’t occurred yet, and Russell’s hot run has lasted almost two months. In 21 starts since January 17, he has averaged 22.1 points on 46.4 percent shooting (44.4 percent from three-point range) and 6.4 assists per game.
Russell’s efforts have undoubtedly caught the attention of Lakers fans and players, who appreciate how he is raising the squad for the stretch drive.
Russell’s performance managed to overshadow good games by James, Anthony Davis and Austin Reaves. James finished two assists shy of a triple-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.
Davis had 24 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks in 30 minutes. Reaves scored 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three-point range, along with dishing out seven assists and grabbing six rebounds.
