Aston Villa has had a fantastic season thus far, but the coming week looks crucial.
Villa are fourth in the Premier League after beating Nottingham Forest and Luton Town, and they are 11 points ahead of sixth-placed Manchester United, whose defeat at Villa Park in February was so devastating.
Villa will travel to Ajax on Thursday for the opening leg of the Europa Conference League last 16, followed by a home match against fifth-placed Tottenham on Sunday. The next Thursday, Ajax will play at home.
At this point in the season, those three games are suddenly critical. How will Unai Emery approach it? Fans will not be pleased to see many players resting in Amsterdam on Thursday.
On Saturday, midfielder Jacob Ramsey appeared to have worsened the foot ailment that has sidelined him for much of the season.
In defence, Ezri Konsa, who has been outstanding this season, has only recently returned from injury, while Pau Torres, who has been as impressive, missed the win over Luton. Defender Diego Carlos is also hurt, leaving little space for movement.
Emi Martinez is an indispensable goalkeeper.
Prospects Tim Iroegbunam, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, and new addition Morgan Rogers are all looking for an opportunity in the team.
Emery has already made some painful decisions this season, and there are more to come this week.
