Daniel Jeremiah: Commanders Shouldn’t Do ‘Unprecedented’ Trade for Caleb Williams
The Washington Commanders shouldn’t give up a “unprecedented” haul in order to trade up in the 2024 NFL Draft, according to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah.
With the No. 2 pick now held by the Commanders, the Chicago Bears will be able to select among LSU’s Jayden Daniels, UNC’s Drake Maye, and USC’s Caleb Williams.
When asked if he would “suggest [the Commanders] doing something unprecedented to go get Caleb Williams,” Jeremiah gave a negative response to an inquiry from Rich Eisen of NFL Network.
“I’m not sure if I would describe it as ‘unprecedented,'” Jeremiah stated on “The Rich Eisen Show” on Sunday. “I think if you could get something done that’s within reason, I could make a case for that.”
“I like the other two quarterbacks. I think there’s three good quarterbacks in this draft that are really highly graded.”
Using the No. 2 pick to select Maye or Daniels would be “a really, really good option” that does not involve the Commanders giving up future draft capital, Jeremiah added.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network stated on Tuesday that he thinks the Bears would need to receive “historic, crazy compensation” in order to forfeit their opportunity to select the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner.
Leaders of the Commanders, such as assistant general manager Adam Peters, who worked seven seasons in the 49ers front office prior to joining Washington in January, may find it difficult to sell that.
When the team traded three first-round picks to move up and select quarterback Trey Lance at No. 3 in the draft in 2021, Peters was a member of John Lynch’s staff. Two years later, the 49ers traded Lance for a single fourth-round pick.
“You see Adam Peters approaching there, and you always have your wounds on you. Perhaps The enormous haul that needed to be raised in order to get Trey Lance, which didn’t work out, is one concern that he may have with John Lynch, Jeremiah stated.
On April 25, the NFL Draft of 2024 is scheduled to start in Detroit.
