8 pending free agents the Colts should re-sign
With the 2024 offseason officially underway, the Indianapolis Colts will have a lot of decisions to make, including what to do with the group of players that will become free agents.
According to Over The Cap, the Colts will have enough salary-cap space—roughly $58.9 million—to re-sign several pending free players before they become available in mid-March.
The Colts should try to re-sign these eight pending free agents this offseason:
Re-signing Pittman to an extension is the Colts’ top objective in the early part of the offseason. The Colts should aim to sign their top wideout to a long-term contract, even though he stated he would be happy to play under the franchise tag if it meant completing an agreement. Despite a quarterback carousel, Pittman has been extremely productive and has demonstrated that he can succeed in a leadership capacity. This is an obvious choice.
It will be intriguing to observe Moore’s future developments. The Colts ought to consider re-signing the adaptable slot defender following his significant comeback in the 2023 season. Although Julius Brents and Jaylon Jones show promise, Moore has been the leader in the secondary for the past few seasons. Moore returned to his Pro Bowl caliber form in the second year under Gus Bradley.
Theoretically, players’ worth would have suffered in a contract year if they missed six games owing to a suspension. For Stewart, however, the contrary could not be truer. Even though Stewart’s suspension was unfortunate, we were able to witness the run defense in action for six straight games without him. The unit performed so badly that it’s possible Stewart gained influence while he was away. As a defensive tackle, Stewart is at the height of his abilities, and he’s becoming stronger as a pass rusher.
Few players have earned the type of respect that Lewis has. Despite suffering season-ending knee injuries halfway through the 2021 and 2022 seasons, Lewis came back in 2023 to post a career year. It’s unlikely he will sign for the $2.1 million he did last offseason but as long as the money isn’t outlandish, Lewis should be retained as a crucial depth piece.
This should be another interesting case. Moss formed a solid 1-2 punch with starter Jonathan Taylor, and he deserves his flowers for the production he posted early in the 2023 season. Though that production tailed off with Gardner Minshew under center, Moss proved he can be a solid change-of-pace back. The Colts should look to re-sign him as long as it’s not for borderline starter money.
Sanchez is a free agent for the first time in his career. Despite coming off an Achilles injury that claimed his entire 2022 season, Sanchez averaged a career-high 48.3 yards per punt attempt during the 2023 campaign. He also downed 21-of-68 punts inside the 20-yard line, marking the fifth time in six seasons he’s surpassed the 20 mark.
