New footage shows Patrick Mahomes’ shocked reaction to the 49ers’ coin toss decision at Super Bowl LVIII before quarterback runs back to Travis Kelce and the Chiefs in disbelief
The surprise on Patrick Mahomes’ face during the Super Bowl overtime call by San Francisco 49ers captain Fred Warner to have the ball first was captured in newly released NFL video.
The two squared off for an overtime coin toss at centerfield after four quarters ended in a 19-all tie. The 49ers would discover shortly after how their choice allowed Mahomes to guide Kansas City to their second consecutive championship.
The video from ‘Inside the NFL’ captured Mahomes interacting with his teammates following the coin toss, aside from the look of mixed amazement and perplexity in his eyes. Mahomes blasted the decision to his teammates in shock as he jogged off the field.
‘They want it, they want the ball,’ Mahomes said as he approached the sideline. ‘They wanted it baby.’
‘We want them to have the ball,’ tight end Travis Kelce exclaimed. ‘They want it they can have it.’
It was eventually discovered that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, along with his team, were not aware of the new postseason overtime regulations. Each team now has a sudden-death opportunity to score according to the new rules.
The clip shows fullback Kyle Juszczyk looking concerned after learning about the rule change, demonstrating San Francisco’s ignorance of the rule before overtime ever started.
Juszczyk said to his teammates, “Hey, even if we score a touchdown, they still get the ball.” “I was unaware of that.”
After the game, Shanahan said, “We went through all the analytics and talked to those guys, and we just decided we wanted the ball third. None of us have a ton of experience with it.”
With the victory, Kansas City won their third championship in five years and became the first resurgent winners since the New England Patriots and Tom Brady in 2003 and 2004.
