Since the NFL season concluded on Super Bowl Sunday, there appears to have been a significant shift in the outlook for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ 2024 summer.
Kenny Pickett will be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, head coach Mike Tomlin informed reporters four days after the team’s elimination from the AFC playoffs on January 14.
However, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk stated that a more well-known quarterback might emerge as a more viable choice.
During a broadcast on 93.7 The Fan on February 15, Florio stated that Kirk Cousins’ camp is “keeping an eye” on the Steelers.
“I spoke with some folks last week who were interested in the idea of the Steelers making a move for Kirk Cousins, but I’m not sure whether they would be willing to pay a player of his caliber! And those individuals were closely associated with, if not part of, the Kirk Cousins organization,” Florio stated, as reported by Sports Illustrated. It’s an admission that the possibility exists. I believe that the Cousins camp is keeping a watch on the Steelers and the [Atlanta] Falcons.
Prior to Florio’s revelation, Fox Sports stated that Justin Fields of the Bears was the betting favorite to end up with the Steelers.
Steelers’ Ideal Situation
The 35-year-old cousins won’t be available for cheap when he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March. According to Spotrac, Cousins is expected to sign a three-year contract worth $35 million in 2023, with an average salary of $39.5 million each year.
Despite being $13 million above the salary cap as of February 15, Noah Strackbein of Sports Illustrated states that while the Steelers “may try to clear as much space as possible, it would take a lot of moves to come up with the money needed for Cousins.”
