The Tennessee Titans are just one Patrick Mahomes away from really getting going.
The Titans announced the hire of Kansas City Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi as their next general manager Friday. Borgonzi’s been with the Chiefs since 2009, and has been general manager Brett Veach’s top deputy since 2021, helping oversee one of the most successful dynastic runs in NFL history. Veach, coach Andy Reid and Mahomes, of course, deserve the lion’s share of the credit for the Chiefs’ success, along with key players like tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones. But Borgonzi has played more than a small role, working his way up from scout to director of player personnel to director of football operations to assistant GM.
Borgonzi won’t be bringing Mahomes with him to Tennessee. But his choice to come to the Titans over the New York Jets, with whom he interviewed for their more traditional GM vacancy, or stay put in the Kansas City empire can be seen as a pretty big get for Titans president of football operations Chad Brinker and the whole organization.
Here are three things the Borgonzi hire tells us about the Tennessee Titans‘ future.
In Mike Borgonzi, Tennessee Titans defy ‘friendly hire’ expectations
At the beginning of the search, reports surfaced that former Oakland Raiders GM Reggie McKenzie, who’d worked with Brinker in Green Bay, was a front runner for the job. As the search continued, indications seemed to point to Green Bay executive Jon-Eric Sullivan, another former Brinker co-worker, as the favorite.
