Dallas Mavericks star guard Kyrie Irving underwent surgery, the team announced Tuesday evening. The procedure is to repair a broken left hand. He sustained the injury while training earlier this month.
Irving took to X on Tuesday night to express his thanks to those who wished him well and his intent to rest and recover.
“Tribe, Thank you for all the messages and prayers. GOD truly knew that I needed to take a break from Basketball after the long season and give myself some time to heal,” he wrote. “I am in love with getting better at my craft, but now I must rest and recover.”
The Mavericks didn’t provide any further insight or details about the severity of the break. However, the Mayo Clinic notes that “it can take several months or longer for complete healing” after hand surgery.
Training camp usually begins in late September or early October, and the NBA regular season begins around Halloween. That gives Irving roughly two to three months to recover if his rehabilitation goes smoothly.
Last season, Irving helped lead the Mavericks to their first NBA Finals appearance since the 2010-11 season. He averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.0 steals in 40.0 minutes while appearing in all 22 of Dallas’ postseason games.
The Mavericks said they would provide further medical updates on Irving’s status as appropriate.
