It was the tale of the Rugby World Cup of 2023, and now, legend Siya Kolisi of South Africa has revealed in an exclusive interview with TNT Sports how he miraculously recovered from an ACL injury to lead his team to consecutive titles.
Just five months before the competition began, in April of last year, Kolisi’s goal of playing in France seemed to have come to an end when he sustained a catastrophic knee injury during the Sale Sharks’ United Rugby Championship match against Munster.
Kolisi said that he was prepared for the worst, anticipating being out for a period of six to nine months.
Just over four months after his injury, the 32-year-old, who has since joined Racing 92, lined up for the Springboks in a friendly against Wales because he was determined to do everything in his power to heal.
“That was our first game against Wales, [I returned after] four months and one day,” he said to TNT Sports analyst Ugo Monye.
“I went home after the Sharks game against Munster and assumed I was okay since I was still moving about. I had a scan, and they informed me that I would only have nine months left.”My wife started crying as soon as I told her it was finished. “No, it’s not done,” was her response.
