This offseason, the Green Bay Packers will focus heavily on their defense. “Middle of the pack” is not good enough for Jeff Hafley’s team. The entirely redesigned defensive coaching staff will bring a new energy and approach to a defense that appears to have the talent but has yet to put it all together.

Today, it was revealed that the Packers would sign a 25-year-old linebacker for at least the 2024 season.

According to various sources, the Packers have re-signed linebacker Kristian Welch.

Welch, 25, joined the Packers’ practice squad before Week 1 and was elevated to the active roster in September. During his career with the organization, he appeared in 14 games and saw 210 snaps on special teams, recording six tackles.

Rich Bisaccia preserves one of his most trusted special teams players by re-signing Welch, especially with the Packers moving to a 4-3 base defense.

Anders Carlson will have to work hard to keep his roster spot. While the Packers will give him every opportunity to win his job, he will still need to perform.

Jack Podlesny was signed less than 96 hours after the Packers’ season had concluded.

Podlesny (6-0, 195) started three seasons for the Bulldogs, making 61 of 74 field goals (82.4%) and 182 of 184 extra points (98.9%). Despite this, he made only three of eight field goals beyond 40 yards in 2022 (37.5%).

Rich Bisaccia will seek to continue to improve the Packers’ coverage teams this offseason, but penalties will be his primary focus. In 2023, the Packers had one of the most heavily penalized special teams in the NFL.
