The Detroit Lions almost lost the opportunity to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. After a good first half, they faltered in the second half, losing 34-31 to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game.
However, there is a lot of excitement surrounding the organization coming into the 2024 season. So much so, in fact, that ESPN expert Harry Douglas feels the Lions possess the best chance to dethrone the reigning world champion Kansas City Chiefs.
“When I look at this team and you look at Jared Goff at the quarterback position, he understands what it takes to beat a guy like Patrick Mahomes,” stated Douglas. “Now, granted, they did it in the season’s first game on Thursday night. The Chiefs didn’t have Travis Kelce or Chris Jones. We understand that those are two large holes that did not exist. But I’m going to go back to his time with the Los Angeles Rams, when they had that shootout against Patrick Mahomes and company. So, Jared Goff has played Patrick Mahomes a few times in his career, and he understands that when you play against a quarterback like him, you have to hold the fort down.
The Lions have proven to be a great offensive club that can find ways to win. This team has many features that make it a strong contender for the title in 2024.
The culture being built by Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes is at the top of the list. Since taking over in 2021, the company has switched its focus to a single, win-oriented ethos.
