According to Calvin Watkins of The Dallas Morning News, Dallas has given Gallup’s agent, Kevin Robinson, permission to pursue a trade.
“The Cowboys have given WR Michael Gallup permission to seek a trade,” a source stated. “The situation is difficult because teams expect Gallup to be released,” the journalist tweeted.
Gallup is not worth the cash.
The decision is believed to be primarily pecuniary. The Cowboys need to act quickly to avoid paying a big portion of his 2024 salary.
If he makes the roster after March 16th, he will be guaranteed $4 million of his 8.5 million base pay for the 2024 season.
His performance over the last two seasons has not been at the level some expected, and the Cowboys appear to be Gallup has had a difficult few years, most recently suffering a season-ending ACL tear in 2021. He was then signed by the Cowboys on a five-year contract worth $57.5 million.
This has been a recurring trend in the Cowboys’ trades, as they have attempted to acquire potential players who have had injuries or declines in form at low prices. They did the same for Prescott’s ankle ailment and Barry Church’s Achilles tear.
