Despite a horrible finish last season, the Chicago Bears are they heavy-favorites to land Caleb Williams in the upcoming draft. And if all goes according to the front office’s plan, the team can back the rookie up with some veteran experience by acquiring Tyrod Taylor in the offseason.
After finishing with a 7-10 record in the previous season, the Bears went down to fourth place in the NFC North division. With a run that failed to make the playoffs, Chicago is in need of talent to help steer the team toward the postseason.
This is where Williams is projected to come in. The USC Trojans star is the undisputed top pick in this year’s draft, and having him on the field for Chicago is seen as a boost. The only problem is the franchise picked Justin Fields in 2021, creating an overlap for the Bears.
If Chicago chooses to go for Williams, there can be a way to get him the help he’ll need at the backup quarterback position at a team-friendly cost. Of course, that would entail getting creative in the offseason with so many options to choose from.
In this regard, Tyrod Taylor may be what the Bears need at the backup QB position. As it stands, the New York Giants’ veteran may have what it takes to strengthen Chicago’s lineup next season. Cody Benjamin shares more in his article for CBS:
“The one-time Buffalo Bills starter was arguably the New York Giants’ best QB in a rocky 2023 season, but he struggled to stay on the field, which has been an issue at each of his last four stops. In terms of short-term fill-ins, however, he’s among the most polished, still offering solid mobility and deep-ball touch. He should find work as a trusted No. 2 yet again.
With a $5 million contract next season, there’s a lot of upside to getting Taylor for the Bears. His availability, plus the potential pick of Williams, will definitely make the offseason interesting for Chicago.
