Former Steelers cornerback William Gay hired by Washington Commanders

Pittsburgh (KDKA — William Gay, a former cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has joined the coaching staff of the Washington Commanders.

Gay was brought on as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach by the Commanders and their new head coach, Dan Quinn.

The Steelers selected Gay in the fifth round of the 2007 draft. He played his first five seasons with Pittsburgh, starting forty games during the regular and postseason seasons.

Gay started four of the team’s 16 regular season games and played in all three postseason contests before the team’s 2008 run to the Super Bowl. In the postseason, he recorded three tackles and one fumble recovery.

Gay played his final five seasons in Pittsburgh after spending the 2012 season with the Arizona Cardinals. His finest 2014 was his statistically best season in the black and gold, with three interceptions and three touchdowns on defense. During that season, he also had 69 tackles and 12 passes defensed. 2018 saw his retirement.

Before joining the Commanders’ staff, he spent time on the Texas Longhorns coaching staff.
