The defending Super Bowl champions have lost three of their last four games and tempers are beginning to flare among their most high profile players.
This season, standout quarterback Patrick Mahomes has lost his composure on the sidelines multiple times, and Travis Kelce also lost his cool during the 14–20 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Christmas Day.
A clearly irritated Kelce threw his helmet down the sideline after the Raiders halted the Chiefs’ offensive near the end of the first half.
The All-Pro tight end seemed to be receiving harsh remarks from head coach Andy Reid, who even shoved the helmet aside so Kelce could not instantly retrieve it.
Although the conversation seemed chilly at the time, Kelce has subsequently defended his head coach and stated that he must examine himself before assigning blame to anyone.
On a recent episode of Jason and Travis Kelce’s ‘New Height’s; podcast, Jason said of the incident, “the frustration was visible on the sideline.
“You had the incident where you tossed your helmet, in typical Kelce fashion.”
Speaking about his interaction with Reid, Travis responded, “he’s looking out for me and I love him for it.
“I didn’t go back out there and play good. He wanted to see the fire in me and I reacted in a bad way.
“He wanted to get the best out of me but right now I’m not playing my best football and I gotta lock the f*** in and be more accountable for him and be more accountable for my teammates.
Maintaining composure is essential for a leader, as it’s the only way to shift the tide.
This season, Kelce has not played at his best, and some have said that his relationship with pop sensation Taylor Swift is becoming an unwanted distraction. One such person is Fox Sports analyst Skip Bayless.
This season, Swift has gone to eight games. When Swift watched the Chiefs play, they had won four games in the past, but now had a 5-3 record.
Kelce discussed the Chiefs’ overall issues on the show, acknowledging that it has been a trying experience.
“It’s not just the Raiders, there have been a lot of teams that we’ve played where we’ve struggled to catch a rhythm,” he stated.
“Right now, it’s a frustrating f***ing situation, but I swear to you all that we will strive to repair it every single day.
“It’s not just one guy, it’s not just me playing like dog s***, everybody’s in this f***ing thing together, everyone at some point hasn’t been accountable and we just gotta bring it together man.”
