Former Alabama Football Running Back Dead at 42
Ray Hudson, a former running back for the Alabama Crimson Tide, has reportedly passed away, according to reports from Ryan Phillips of Patch.com and a number of tweets on social media from former teammates.
The 42-year-old’s death’s circumstances are still unknown at this time.
Between 2001 and 2004, Hudson was Alabama’s running back of choice. In 42 games, he caught 30 passes for 333 yards and three touchdowns and ran 278 times for 1639 yards and seven touchdowns. Before sustaining a leg injury that cut short his season in 2004, he was leading the Tide and bearing the weight.
He joined the New Orleans Saints in 2004 as an undrafted free agent, but he was released from training camp soon after.
Along with more than sixty-five other former football players, the tailback sued the NCAA in 2014 over its handling of concussions during his playing career.
In 2014, Hudson said to Al.com, “I should have taken myself out of the play because I didn’t understand nothing.” “With me, there were moments when everything would become completely dark, even though your eyes would be open. When the quarterback calls the play out while you’re in the huddle, all you hear is hmmmm. However, it returns after a short while and starts to become more apparent. I believe that occurs frequently. Some individuals choose to ignore it. On the football field, maybe that’s the reason you made mistakes.”
He recorded two concussions sustained in Tuscaloosa, one during a practice in 2002 and another during a game versus Western Carolina in 2004.
