Kenny Pickett, the quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, will be assessed ahead of Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens after practice on Wednesday.
Following news on Monday from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo that the quarterback, based on preliminary testing, had not suffered an ACL damage, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided an update on Pickett’s condition on Tuesday.
The injury was later revealed by Garafolo and Ian Rapoport to be a bone bruise, thus the “door is open” for him to potentially participate in Sunday’s game against the Ravens. But Pittsburgh could decide to rest him for a few weeks because they have a bye the next week.
Additionally, Pickett was “not expected to miss much, if any time,” according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via ESPN’s Brooke Pryor), and the quarterback might “push the issue.” to play against Baltimore.
In the second half of Pittsburgh’s Week 4 matchup with the Houston Texans, Pickett sustained a knee injury. He was declared out of the game and was replaced by Mitch Trubisky, a former signal-caller for the Chicago Bears.
Despite Trubisky’s extensive NFL experience, there was anticipation for Pickett going into the season.
Despite having an overall difficult first season with seven touchdown passes against nine interceptions, the 2022 first-round pick showed glimpses of his talent at times. Then, in his second year of prep, he made an impression that gave hope that he may improve.
However, while finishing 60.6 percent of his throws for 803 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions in his first season, he has been inconsistent thus far in his second.
Attention now turns to Trubisky with Pickett potentially sidelined for a spell. He failed to live up to expectations with the Bears, but he can at least make plays with his arm and legs while keeping the team afloat in the short term.
