Oklahoma redshirt senior offensive guard McKade Mettauer was apologetic after Monday’s practice for his role in a skirmish during the fourth quarter of the Sooners’ 59-20 win over West Virginia, which led to his ejection.
While Mettauer said he won’t miss the first half of OU’s game at BYU on Saturday, he vowed as one of the team’s veteran leaders to represent the program and university better.
“Obviously, I let the moment and the passion of the game get to my head and I lost control of myself,” said Mettauer, who in 49 career starts had never been kicked out of a game. “I mean, yeah, that was number 12, the one that smoked (redshirt senior wide receiver Drake Stoops) on that play. But I need to have better control of myself.
“I got that first penalty for pushing him and then the second one was just for running my mouth on the way off the field. So, yeah, that’s not who I am. But obviously it happens.”
Mettauer’s anxiety was lifted a bit on his way to Oklahoma’s locker room after being disqualified as OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. offered his hand out for a fist bump.
