Former Panthers star reportedly interested in Carolina’s head coach opening
The Carolina Panthers’ 2023 season has gone off the rails. The Panthers have the NFL’s worst record at 1-10, a mark that cost head coach Frank Reich his job even before his first year in Charlotte was over. To make matters even worse, Carolina doesn’t even have its first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft — that belongs to Chicago, and if the season ended today, the Bears would be picking #1 at the Panthers’ expense.
Last year’s #1 overall pick, Bryce Young, has struggled through his first NFL season with the Panthers. The franchise hired Reich specifically because of his reputation for working with young quarterbacks, but the Panthers’ offense has been stuck in neutral since week 1. Young on Wednesday had a chance to address the reasons why during a press conference with the assembled media
The Panthers have yet to score 30 points in a game and have surpassed the 300-yard mark only twice. Carolina’s defense is sixth in yards allowed but has been brutally unlucky — and harmed by the offense’s inability to stay on the field for long stretches.
“It’s a collective unit, there’s no finger-pointing from players, coaches, nothing,” Young said. “We all could have been better. We have to improve.”
Seven months later, Panthers owner David Tepper discusses the Bryce Young pick
Quarterback Bryce Young will complete his rookie season with a different head coach than the one he started with. The Carolina Panthers have fired Frank Reich, the NFL team announced on Monday.
The Panthers lost to the Tennessee Titans 17-10 on Sunday to sink 1-10, the worst record in the NFL.

An NFL quarterback, offensive coordinator and head coach of the Indianapolis Colts before joining Carolina, Reich was in his first season with the Panthers, on the ground floor of the NFL team’s rebuild with Young as its cornerstone.
Carolina chose the former Alabama All-American and Heisman Trophy winner with the first pick in the NFL Draft on April 27. Young has started every 2023 game but one for the Panthers, sitting out the third contest of the season with an ankle injury.

Carolina ranks 29th in points per game and 30th in yards per game among the NFL’s 32 teams this season. The Panthers haven’t scored more than 15 points in any of their past five games.
Special-teams coordinator Chris Tabor will step into the role of interim head coach for Carolina, which has six games remaining in the 2023 season, starting with a trip to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown will assume the play-calling duty that Reich had performed.
