The stint for Anthony Black in the NBA Summer League came to an end on Wednesday and the sixth pick is already looking ahead to his rookie season with the Orlando Magic.
Black played in each of the first three games for the Magic in Las Vegas and was then shut down for their last two contests on Thursday and Saturday. He averaged 11 points, 8.7 rebounds, four assists and two steals on 40.6% shooting from the field.
The sixth pick entered summer league wanting to learn as much as possible on the court and will have the same mindset about his upcoming first year in the NBA
“Just a lot of growth,” Black told Lauren Jbara on NBA TV on Saturday. “We have a lot of good players so we’ll see how I fit in with the team and what the coaches want me to do but really just to grow a lot and win a lot of games and just kind of learning and seeing what it is about.”
Black was named to the SEC All-Freshman team last season after averaging 12.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals. He led the conference in minutes (34.9) and was the only player to rank inside the top 25 in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and blocks (22).
The 6-foot-7 guard is viewed as one of the top defenders in the draft this year. He boasts a 6-foot, 7 1/2-inch wingspan and is highly touted for his athleticism and willingness to lock up on the defensive end, which was on full display in Las Vegas.
The Magic have a rather crowded backcourt so Black will have to battle for playing time next season but the 19-year-old appears to be up for the challenge and is eager to get to work.
