Due to his play on defense with the Bulls, Alex Caruso was compared to greats such as Deion Sanders and was even considered for Defensive Player of the Year.
The 2023–24 NBA season hasn’t started off well for the Chicago Bulls. With a record of 3-6, the Bulls are positioned 12th in the Eastern Conference. On their roster, Chicago has seen some promising players emerge, though. Alex Caruso is the talk of the town right now because of his defense, which has made him a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY). That’s why he received a perfect “Deion Sanders” review from one of his teammates.
The Chicago Bulls’ Deion Sanders is Alex Caruso.
In a piece on the seasoned guard’s leadership, DeMar DeRozan talked about the effect Caruso has on Chicago’s team:
When you witness something like him jumping on the boards or giving his body away, you have to follow your brother. DeRozan told ESPN, “And you want to help him as much as possible.”
DeRozan continued by drawing comparisons between Caruso and a number of legendary, high-impact athletes from the past, such as Ray Lewis, Charles Woodson, and the recently popular Deion Sanders.
DeRozan declared with pride, “He definitely is one of those great vocalists, a communicator, and a competitor when it comes to that end of the ball.” Caruso has a similar impact, much as Deion Sanders and the other greats listed earlier had in improving the fortunes of their teams.
Caruso showed amazing leadership and defensive intelligence in Chicago’s suspenseful loss to the Phoenix Suns. In addition to blocking passes and calling out offensive plays by the Suns, the 29-year-old also played relentless individual defense.
Chicago is constantly in the game because of the seasoned guard, even though the Bulls have more defeats than victories. Despite leading the Bulls’ defense and putting himself in a strong position to win 2023–24 Defensive Player of the Year, Alex Caruso is not happy.
Caruso declared, “I think the next step for us is to take [our defense] and turn it into wins.”
