Trevor Lawrence hadn’t even made ten NFL starts when he and the San Francisco 49ers took on the Jacksonville Jaguars in their previous meeting.
Two years later, Lawrence has played in over thirty more games, including two postseason starts, which have advanced the development of the Jaguars’ franchise quarterback. Shanahan is aware of this.
This past week, Shanahan declared, “He’s always a problem.”
This week, the Jaguars will have a chance to defeat Shanahan and the 49ers at home, but it will require a strong effort from Lawrence to make it happen.
“In my opinion, Trevor is among the league’s most gifted quarterbacks. At any moment, he poses an issue, as Shanahan stated on Wednesday. His stature and the capacity of its pocket. In any kind of play, whether it’s a design run for him or just getting out of the pocket and doing off-schedule stuff, he can make any throw and do whatever he wants with his legs.
Lawrence has passed 1,935 yards and nine touchdowns on 68.3% of his passes through eight games, with four interceptions. In addition, Lawrence has 42 rushes for 216 yards.
I’m hoping so. When asked if it feels like an offensive breakthrough is imminent, Lawrence responded this week, “Every week you kind of hope it’s that week.”
“Instead of stalling out as much, we’ve been much more consistent in just moving the ball. However, as you can see, two weeks prior, we committed some careless errors that allowed Pittsburgh to stay in the game, gave them a chance, and prevented us from truly taking off and blowing the game open. We’re stressing that we have to fix something similar every week; you’re expecting that this week will be that one. A lot of focus was placed on the specifics of maintaining a clean game, such as minimizing turnovers and improving on third down. It would be fantastic to combine all of things this week against a strong club like this one: playing a game where you can finish with very few turnovers, being excellent on third downs, and scoring in the red zone. This is the week to accomplish it; you have to perform well when playing against elite teams.
