Is Nick Sirianni, the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, “stupid”? or “beyond the pale”? or simply ”learning on the job”? In a crucial NFL Week 9 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, Sirianni, an emotional coach, is essentially admitting guilt on all three counts.
During “Dallas Week” in Philadelphia, he said, “We have to treat every day the same.” “You can’t be more excited for one game than the next. That’s for you guys to get (excited), you fans and journalists. I’m not expecting anyone to comprehend that thinking, and I’m not asking anyone to comprehend the mindset of our team there either.
One critic may respond by saying that, given the way Sirianni handles “Dallas Week,” it’s difficult to follow his “mindset” because it seems to be constantly shifting.
He donned a “Beat Dallas” t-shirt during a press conference in 2021 as a rookie coach. That week, the Cowboys defeated his team 41–21. In 2022, too? “It was a foolish move on my part last year,” Sirinnai said to his teammates, gesturing to the jersey, before the Eagles defeated the Cowboys 26–17 in Week 6.
And this year? “If I declare, “We’re going to kick it up because it’s Cowboy Week,” What on earth have we been doing for the past two weeks? “Well, that’s why you lost to the Jets,” you would say. “I never would do that.”
As the Eagles’ head coach for the third season, Sirianni has a 30-12 record. Last February, he guided the Philadelphia Eagles to the Super Bowl, but they were ultimately defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs.
He should be commended greatly for managing what may be the best club in the NFL. However, someone has to confront him with what we might politely refer to as “playful hypocrisy,” which also includes him yelling, “How ’bout them Cowboys!” in a childish jest after the team wins in October 2022.
