It’s one of the strangest products of an NFL trade deadline day filled with rumors and chatter about the 49ers, and has many fans – and even some sober media members – wondering
But a seemingly legitimate account posted a completely false trade rumor that a trade between the 49ers and Giants fell through because New York didn’t receive the paperwork by the deadline.
It’s an interesting story: who doesn’t like the idea of a giant, multi-billion dollar organization like the Giants failing because they couldn’t fill out questionnaires fast enough?
The problem with this story (and an important one) is that it is false.
General Manager John Lynch discussed the sham deal with the 49ers, which reportedly sent cornerback Adoree Jackson to San Francisco, Wednesday morning on San Francisco radio station KNBR.
“That’s not true at all,” Lynch said.
“I spoke to Joe Schoen at one point, but there was nothing about this deal or really any deal, just a recording, that kind of deal.
So that’s it, it’s not real.
Giants’49ers trade rumors sent from Troll account The source of the Giants-49ers trade rumors issue is a tweet from Wesley Steinberg, whose Twitter profile (X) reads: ” NFL and NY Giants Insider.
Sports agent AS-MR.
Husband loves father and son.
Problem is he is a satirist and a famous troll on Twitter.
#Giants completed a deal with #49ers to take Adoree Jackson, but didn’t report to the league in time.
— Wesley Steinberg (@WesSteinberg) October 31, 2023 But as he wrote, “#Giants made a deal with the #49ers for Adoree Jackson but did not report it to the federation in time”, the news broke out.
plausible enough to be true.
Some websites reposted Steinberg’s report without knowing whether it had been reported elsewhere or without checking to see if Steinberg seemed trustworthy.
So the news appeared in reputable places like SB Nation and Athlon Sports.
San Francisco Chronicle writer Eric Branch retweeted (not tweeted) it, and KNBR tweeted a video featuring Dan Dibley mentioning the Giants’ “incompetence.
” Ultimately, Steinberg’s tweet went very, very viral: it was viewed 2.
5 million times on Twitter.
John Lynch: “We’ve had a lot of conversations” There is no Giants-49ers trade, and there shouldn’t even be a Giants-49ers trade rumor.
Still, adding a fullback could be good for San Francisco’s struggling defense, which gave up 400 yards in consecutive weeks for the first time since October 2017.
Of course, the 49ers didn’t have it easy on trade deadline day, adding former No.
2 overall pick Chase Young to a deal with Washington.
Rumors claim something else could be done, and some reports suggest the 49ers have had quarterback conversations with other teams, including Jaylon Johnson in Chicago.
NFL Source: The 49ers are closing out another trade.
I don’t know whose it is, but it looks like they have another person.
— Tim Kawakami (@timkawakami) October 31, 2023 Lynch did not expand on any of these 49ers rumors.
“You know, we’re having a lot of conversations from a lot of different perspectives,” he said.
“And you know, all I can say is this is the deal that makes the most sense and we’re happy to make this addition.
I believe in my heart, we have what it takes in this building to get where we want to go and where we hope to get to.
And now we just need to go out there and do it.
