This weekend, Liverpool will return to Premier League play against an in-form Tottenham team in what may be the most important match of the year thus far.
The Reds have won seven straight games in all competitions, and they are on a deliberate march of their own, but this weekend will be their hardest test of the year.
In order to keep up this strong start to 2023–24, Jurgen Klopp will be hoping his club can make a statement against the team that is now sitting just below the Reds in the league.
Everything you need to know before Tottenham vs. Liverpool is listed here.
Team news – Trent’s back
Trent Alexander-Arnold will be in the team, according to Jurgen Klopp, and the right-back trained normally on Thursday and Friday.
It’s uncertain, though, if he can begin. If Trent is not to be risked, Joe Gomez is healthy.
The only absentees are Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago, and Conor Bradley; there are no more pressing difficulties for Klopp.
Spurs standouts
Harry Kane may not be playing this weekend, but Tottenham still has a lot of guys who may be a threat.
Son Heung-min, who now leads Spurs, scored five goals in six league games so far this year.
He has also scored four goals in his last five games against the Reds, and he will be eager to keep up the trend for a Spurs team that has made significant improvements.
James Maddison, a recent arrival, has also adapted quickly to life in London and has three goals in his last eight matches versus Liverpool.
Vicario, Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie, Sarr, Bissouma, Kulusevski, Maddison, Solomon, and Son make up the likely Spurs XI.
Hosts off to a flyer
Ange Postecoglou has had a strong start to his tenure at Tottenham, as seen by his team’s four victories and two draws in a challenging opening slate of games.
With two points separating them from Liverpool going into this match, Spurs have a chance to pass the Reds if they hand Klopp his first loss of the year.
Postecoglou is a nice man in his own right, and not just because he grew up supporting Liverpool!
“Liverpool was my team, but you grow up, and things change,” he stated on Friday. “I used to love the TV show ‘Happy Days’ back then, too!”
Results for Spurs this year:
Brentford: Drew 2-2; Man United: 2-0; Bournemouth: 2-0; Burnley: 5-2; Sheff United: 2-1
Drew tied Arsenal 2-2.
Salah to overtake Hunt?
Mohamed Salah has a terrific record against Tottenham, as is the case against most teams he plays.
The Egyptian King is presently tied with Roger Hunt as the Liverpool player with the second-most goals for the Reds against Tottenham in the team’s history with nine goals in 13 games versus Spurs.
Although Ian Rush currently leads that category, you wouldn’t rule out the possibility that he will overtake the Welshman before the finish line.
Unbeaten run
Even though the 2022–23 season proved challenging, the last time the Reds lost in any kind of competition was on April 1.
As of right now, Liverpool has the longest unbeaten streak in the Premier League, and the manager will be hoping that streak continues as he attempts to keep the momentum going.
In a 4-1 thumping at the Etihad Stadium from last season, Man City became the last team to defeat the Reds. Since that afternoon, Liverpool has amassed twelve victories and five ties in the league.
Happy hunting ground
The Reds have won three of their four away matches and drew one since Tottenham moved into their new stadium back in 2019.
Surprisingly, Spurs have only won once in this match since 2012, a 4-1 thumping during the one season they played at Wembley.
Hope that streak carries over to Saturday!
First meeting with Postecoglou
On Saturday, the new Tottenham manager will face a Klopp team for the first time in his managerial career.
Postecoglou, a self-described Red, is one of the current betting favorites to succeed Klopp at Anfield when the dreaded day arrives.
This weekend, the manager from Greece will put his boyhood allegiances aside in an effort to build on his successful start in the Premier League.
More changes on the way
As Klopp has distributed playing time among his squad’s depth in recent weeks, the fixture schedule has grown a little busier.
The manager made 10 changes to his team for the League Cup match against Leicester, but it is anticipated that he will return to a lineup that is more similar to the one he used last weekend against West Ham.
Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai, Jones, Salah, Nunez, and Diaz make up the probable Liverpool starting lineup.
Hooper in charge
Worryingly, the match on Saturday will be officiated by Simon Hooper, who officiated the last time the Reds lost!
In April, Liverpool was accused of encircling the official and urging that Rodri be sent off at the Etihad, a request that Hooper rejected.
Adrian Holmes and Simon Long will provide him with support from the sidelines, and Tony Harrington will serve as the fourth official.
Dan Cook will be present at Stockley Park’s VAR room with Darren England.
