Details about Matheus Nunes’ high-profile summer transfer from Wolves to Manchester City have come to light, and they make for fascinating reading.
Wolves claimed they were “disappointed” with how Nunes’ tenure at the organization ended after finalizing a £53 million transfer to the Premier League winners on deadline day.
The midfielder from Portugal received what looked to be public criticism for his actions leading up to his departure from the club’s sporting director, Matt Hobbs.
“I was disappointed with how it ended, it wasn’t necessary the stance Matheus took, but we ended with a good resolution for everyone,” the man stated.
“We lost a player with a lot of potential and talent, but the circumstance has caused us to bring in a larger number of players to strengthen the squad and add competition to the group,” the coach said.
Nunes would be subject to punishment for skipping practice after declaring his intention to sign with Pep Guardiola’s team.
And now, according to a story from The Telegraph, Nunes allegedly forced through his move to City following a “unexpected and fiery” altercation that left the Wolves staff indignant.
At the club’s training facility in Compton Park, it is believed that Nunes spoke with the aforementioned Hobbs and received advice to “remain calm and behave professionally.”
Although they emphasized that it would be on their terms, Wolves told the player that there was a “genuine chance” that a trade would materialize.
Having decided that his possibility of joining Manchester City was over, Nunes reacted poorly. An hour later, he skipped training and left in his car.
It was decided that City would pay £53 million, with no add-ons but a 10% sell-on clause, following extensive negotiations between Hobbs and City’s director of football, Txiki Begiristain.
According to The Athletic, Wolves first turned down a £47 million offer, but the Portuguese midfielder ultimately signed a five-year contract with the Etihad.
Nunes said after signing, “I’m so happy to be joining Manchester City, the Champions of Europe and a club I’ve admired for a long time.”
“I simply couldn’t pass up the chance to work with some of the best players in the world and under one of the greatest coaches in history, Pep Guardiola.
“I gained a lot of knowledge during my time at Wolves, and I’m eager to keep growing in the Premier League, which brings out the best in me.
I can’t wait to get started, get to know the supporters, and maybe contribute to City’s continued success.
