Elye Wahi explains why he turned down a move to Chelsea, stating that he did not want to do so “just because.”
After his 19-goal season with Montpellier in Ligue 1, Elye Wahi was one of the most sought-after properties in the summer market. The Frenchman apparently declined a significant opportunity to sign with Chelsea and other elite English clubs.
Although West Ham was also interested in the striker, Chelsea made contact first. The Blues have combed the market for the best young talent, and they have largely been successful. They did, however, miss out on a few targets, namely Wahi and Antonio Nusa of Club Brugge.
The Norwegian winger gave an explanation for declining a transfer to Chelsea, saying he wanted to be patient with his career and resist the urge to seize the first significant opportunity.
Nusa also stated that he may make a decision soon regarding his next course of action. Although the Blues are likely to re-track him, he will have fierce competition from other teams.
Currently, Wahi has made the comment that he does not want to join Chelsea “just for the sake of it” and has stated that Frankfurt were on the verge of signing him in the summer. He also discussed how difficult it was to wait to sign with Frankfurt because he decided to sign with Lens in order to stay in Ligue 1. The 19-goal star’s remarks were reported by L’Equipe on 90 Min.
Chelsea – I didn’t want to go there just for the sake of going, Wahi stated. More so than Chelsea, Frankfurt was close. Dino Toppmöller, the manager there, and I had a conversation. I found it crucial that he speaks French. The wait for Randal Kolo Muani’s departure was too much for them to handle. I don’t regret anything.
Chelsea sought a new striker, but they didn’t think Wahi could be an important part of their present lineup. They did bring in Nicolas Jackson, a forward who is similar to him, but he might have joined had they given the Lens striker a significant role.
Instead, according to the report, Chelsea made Wahi an offer to sign but instead loaned him to Strasbourg for the current campaign. Wahi preferred to play frequently as opposed to, as he admitted, only for fun. Finally, he decided to join.
Lens, who arrived with a significant task and the opportunity to flourish in the Champions League.
Chelsea will have to get by for the time being with whatever choices they have available to them. Despite the fact that Wahi is not now available, they might search for a new striker once more in January.
