The Arena Although Alfonso Pérez is a far cry from Old Trafford’s glamour, Mason Greenwood won’t be too concerned about such things when he starts life in Getafe.
The 21-year-old was forced to consider the idea that he might never again play elite football a little more than two weeks ago.
Now that I have just been a Getafe player for 24 hours, those worries seem to have subsided.
The Path of Exile
Manchester United was forced to suspend the player while police investigations and prosecution were ongoing as a result of upsetting evidence that the Englishman had assaulted his partner.
In light of the withdrawal of crucial witnesses and the emergence of fresh, secret evidence, the charges were ultimately withdrawn.
The club’s CEO, Richard Arnold, had expected to reintegrate the forward, with Erik ten Hag having previously given his approval, according to an Athletic article. However, Manchester United would later conduct its own internal probe.
This was not to be as the situation developed. The PR outcry was so severe that not only could United no longer rationally consider keeping Greenwood, but even those clubs from leagues near and far who were allegedly interested suddenly started to back off like falling dominoes.
And with each surrender, Greenwood’s chances of once more playing in the top division of football seemed to go smaller.
The Discount
Greenwood now has a second opportunity after Getafe, which was eager to bolster its offensive talent, outbid Lazio on the final day of the transfer window.
Getafe not only acquired an attacker who would typically be outside the realm of possibility for a team of its caliber, but they also did it at a staggering discount: Greenwood will continue to receive £50,000 of his weekly salary of £75,000 from Man United.
The first of its sort at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, Greenwood was introduced to adoring fans during a public training session while performing the typical ball-juggling ritual and giving away his shirt.
