Player evaluations and results for Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa in the Premier League.
As they breezed past Aston Villa at Anfield, Liverpool put on their greatest performance of the 2023–24 Premier League season thus far.
Dominik Szoboszlai’s first goal, Mo Salah’s goal, and an own goal by Matty Cash gave the Reds a convincing 3-0 victory to maintain their unblemished start to the season
Liverpool got off to the best possible start by scoring after only three minutes. Szoboszlai received a corner on the edge of the box and fired the most exquisite left-foot half-volley into the far corner.
On minute 22, the Reds widened their lead as they kept up the pressure. Salah set up Darwin Nunez, who sent a powerful effort that struck the inside of the post but ricocheted off Cash and into the open goal.
After being given plenty of room inside the penalty area, Joel Matip headed wide before Villa finally presented a goal-scoring threat to Liverpool in the 33rd minute, but John McGinn’s shot went high and wide.
Six minutes before halftime, Nunez came close to scoring when his dinked attempt beat the opposing goalkeeper Emi Martinez but missed the woodwork once more.
To their credit, Villa made an effort to mount a comeback soon after the break. When Matty Cash received a corner kick from the left, he must have thought he had cut the deficit when he headed for goal, but Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced a fine save to stop the attempt.
The Reds ought to have penalized that attempt, but Nunez once more failed to pay attention as he pushed Salah’s cross wide from close range. But in the 55th minute, the ÂŁ64 million acquisition from Benfica would prove to be a provider when he flicked on Andy Robertson’s corner and Salah was there to finish at the back post.
The team led by Jurgen Klopp maintained their lead, but they were unable to add to their goal total since the pace naturally slowed down. However, it was a very successful day at work, as Liverpool entered the international break with 10 points from their first four games.
