Liverpool coincidentally recorded their first shutout of the year as Joe Gomez made his first start of the year.
Joe Gomez, who aspires to recapture his best form while wearing a Reds jersey, has praised the influence of Dominik Szoboszlai and his fellow Liverpool summer acquisitions.
In place of the banned Virgil van Dijk, the 26-year-old started his first Premier League game of the 2023–24 season on Sunday’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa. He played out the entire game as the team recorded their first season-opening shutout.
Last season, he only appeared in 21 Premier League games, in part because of injury issues and in part because of the performance of his central defense rivals.
Gomez has experienced ups and downs during his time at Anfield, but he thinks the most recent opportunities he has gained in Jurgen Klopp’s team will serve as a launching pad for a more steady run in the lineup and ultimately better fitness fortunes.
The defender told LFC TV, “Obviously, things change, and you have to try to be ready. “I try to apply myself every day to be ready to try and contribute to the team. That’s what I try to take pride in.
“On a personal level, it’s nice, but getting the three points is even better.”
Gomez gushed about the caliber of Szoboszlai and the team’s other recent additions, praising their ability to seamlessly fit into Klopp’s plans as he discussed how the Reds were able to be so dominant against a difficult opponent in Aston Villa.
Dom’s outstanding goal so early on had an impact and gave the team confidence, he claimed.
Naturally, there have been many personnel changes this year, but the new boys have been great.
They’ve demonstrated their skills, and it’s refreshing to watch the boys settle in so quickly, act as they do, and express themselves.
Once the team returned from the next international break, Gomez urged his teammates to continue their remarkable play that has helped them earn 10 points from their first four league games.
“It’s just the beginning, and we need to keep moving forward,” he remarked.
“This team is different. We believe it’s crucial that we never get ahead of ourselves; as soon as the lads leave to travel the world, we must immediately return and regroup in an effort to maintain the momentum.
